In Sound Mind will look familiar to many people, and as a first-person horror game with abstract, psychologically manifested monsters, comparisons to titles like Outlast or Amnesia: The Dark Descent are no doubt around the corner. Some of what In Sound Mind has to offer can even be experienced right now thanks to a Steam demo, but new gameplay has also been revealed.
The reveal of In Sound Mind came back in June, and it brought a new trailer with it. In Sound Mind seems to be a psychological thriller, with the monsters created from people’s phobias, paranoias, and twisted self-images. How much is real seems uncertain, especially with the news that just dropped at Gamescom. A new trailer has been released showing a full 6 minutes of gameplay for In Sound Mind, with the gameplay coming from two of the game’s segments.

In Sound Mind, according to its creator in the video, will be separated into segments, each one tied to a different tape. The tapes are used to access spooky locations housing monsters tied to events that happened there. The most prominent monster on display was the Gorgon-esque Virginia, who players have to ward off with a mirror. The formula should feel a bit familiar to anyone who has played the latest Dark Pictures game, where the player focuses on different groups of people in different time periods.
There are more action-oriented moments in In Sound Mind as well, including a few first-person shooter segments. The guns in the game won’t be effective against all the monsters, as beings like The Shade prove. Since Amnesia is getting a sequel and many other horror games are already out or around the corner, In Sound Mind really does need to stand out next year.
In Sound Mind does feature spooky mannequin at one point that, without spoiling anything, somehow stands apart from others in games. Plus, not only does each tape segment have a different objective and mechanics to learn, but each one also has its own unique musical score. These scores were composed alongside the game as it was being made to fit it perfectly. There are not many horror games that can boast an amazing soundtrack on its own, but In Sound Mind may prove the exception. It’s just one of several reasons why the Xbox Series X will probably be a great platform for horror titles.
In Sound Mind is coming out in 2021 for the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X
