Hulk and Iron Man Bringing Along Their Friends
The Marvel’s Avengers beta has gone live on some platforms and it looks like some cheeky people have dug through the game’s code, discovering as many as seven possible Marvel’s Avengers characters coming into the game post-launch.
Marvel’s Avengers is all about the titular team of superheroes coming together again after a catastrophe painted all superheroes in a bad light. Avengers fangirl Kamala Khan has investigated the A-Day crisis and found a greater conspiracy at work, and now she’s proving instrumental in getting the band back together.
The modern Avengers cast — Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man, and The Hulk — are all known to be making an appearance in the game alongside Kamala Khan (and Spider-Man on the PS4), but this Marvel’s Avengers character leak shows that many more characters might be on the way.
Who’s In the Marvel’s Avengers Characters Leak?
A pair of submissions to the /r/PlayAvengers subreddit (first, second) link to a Pastebin that purports to show code taken directly from the beta. In this code are references to seven notable names (aside from the usual Avengers cast):
- Captain Marvel
- She-Hulk
- Kate Bishop
- War Machine
- Peter Parker
- Frostbite
- Rico
Before you get all excited, there’s a fair amount to dig through here and not everything is crystal clear. Take a look at the code references to She-Hulk as an example:
The “Hero Card” and “Hero Token” listed here may refer to a playable character. However, there doesn’t seem to be a consistent naming convention for all of the listed items. Note that “Peter Parker” is listed but his hero name “Spider-Man” is not, and yet “She-Hulk” is listed but her real name “Jennifer Walters” is not. “Frostbite” and “Rico” may refer to alternate costumes or dummied-out data, but those are also the names of two X-Men.
So what does this all mean? We could get completely unique playable characters, but many of these listings are similar to confirmed characters. She-Hulk could be an alternate The Hulk costume, War Machine could be an alternate Iron Man costume, and Kate Bishop could be an alternate Hawkeye costume.
The metadata on these Marvel’s Avengers characters is certainly interesting, but chunks of code like this often contain dummied-out content that might never see the light of day. Barring any releases of screenshots or video, we won’t really know who’s coming to Marvel’s Avengers for certain until it’s officially announced. For now, you can pre-order Marvel’s Avengers via its official website.
