Mortal Kombat 11 has now sold more than 12 million copies, taking the series' total units sold to over 73 million copies.
Mortal Kombat is fast approaching the 30th anniversary of the release of its very first game. Ed Boon himself recently said he can't quite believe what started as a humble fighting game has grown into a franchise spanning multiple forms of media. 11 games, three movies, and a whole host of other things that all originated from that very first game.
The video games remain Mortal Kombat's heart and soul though, of course, and a recent sales update has revealed players are far from tired of them. WB Games has revealed Mortal Kombat 11, the latest addition to the series, has now sold more than 12 million copies. According to Fandom's numbers, that makes it the best-selling Mortal Kombat game ever.

The last update WB Games provided in regard to Mortal Kombat 11's sales came back in October 2020. At that time, Mortal Kombat 11 was lagging behind Mortal Kombat 10 on eight million copies sold. Clearly, the launch of the newest game's Ultimate Edition has greatly boosted that number, not to mention the release of the new Mortal Kombat movie earlier this year.
The fighting franchise has undoubtedly received a shot in the arm over the course of the last 12 months, and WB Games and NetherRealm are reaping the rewards. That's it for Mortal Kombat 11, though. The game has received all of the DLC it is ever going to get and the studio responsible for it will now be moving on to its next major project. What exactly that project is going to be is currently anyone's guess.
Since Mortal Kombat 11 is still performing so well, and its Ultimate Edition is still less than a year old, it probably isn't going to be Mortal Kombat 12. Rumors continue to swirl that NeatherRealm is hard at work on a Marvel fighting game, possibly inspired by its own Injustice games based on the DC universe. Reports that NetherRealm will remain a part of Warner Bros' Studios may thwart those rumors, though.
