Overwatch 2 Will Collect Voice Chats of Reported Players

Overwatch 2 Voice Chats Are Being Recorded

Overwatch 2 devs may be recording voice chats. It has come to light that Blizzard will be collecting temporary voice messages from players who have been reported by others. This is part of their effort in cutting down on in-game disruptive behavior once the free-to-play shooter launches on October 4th.

This system relies on players reporting disruptive behavior as soon as they encounter it in game because we do not store voice chat data long term,” devs confirmed. “This means you should report disruptive behavior as it is occurring in-game to give us the best chance at detecting, catching, and preventing disruptive players.”

This new system that Overwatch 2 devs are referring to is going to use a speech-to-text tool for transcribing the voice recording. Once the transcription is complete, they are going to delete the clip. Their chat review tools will examine the transcript to verify if the reported player was, indeed, engaging in disruptive behavior. They will erase the text file in approximately 30 days after the transcription takes place.

Your reports matter,” they continued. “Player reporting is one of the most effective methods for identifying and actioning disruptive behavior as quickly as possible.”

This new practice is what Overwatch 2 devs refer to as the Defense Matrix. It is a collection of systems that they intentionally came up with to combat cheating. They also want to promote positive behavior within the community. The franchise is finally going free-to-play. With that in mind, they developed an expanded set of tools. Its purpose is to monitor the behavior of their much larger player pool.

Overwatch 2 is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X platforms.
