The recent Pokemon Presents presentation had a bunch of announcements for future and currently released Pokemon games. These included the upcoming Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the remakes of the DS generation Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. One of the highlighted features that will be making a beloved return was the Grand Underground, an upgraded version of the Underground feature from the original. A new photo from Nintendo highlights the massive size of the Grand Underground, showing off the new additions and areas made.
The Underground is an area that is found underneath the Sinnoh region, which is playable in Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. In this area, players can interact with each other wirelessly and engage in a variety of activities. This includes mining, setting up traps, creating bases, and more. The mining minigame in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl is a particular favorite, as it allows Pokemon trainers to find important usable items like Heart Scales, Evolutionary Stones, or even rare Pokemon fossils. While the area in the DS games consisted only of a rocky cave, the new evolved Grand Underground is adding a variety of new areas to explore.

As seen in the new trailer for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Underground has been given a huge overhaul, with the addition of "Pokemon Hideaways." These new areas have Pokemon that can only be encountered there, with the statues placed inside of the player's secret base being able to change which Pokemon are available in these areas. The Hideaways were given a brief look in the Pokemon Presents trailer, but a new tweet from Nintendo shows off the entire underground area that sprawls across the Sinnoh Region, along with where each Hideaway is.
This map shows off some of the Pokemon that can be found here too, with appropriate types to match the area. For example, the Slugma line of Pokemon can be encountered in the fiery lava area, while the marsh and swamp-like area contains Poison-type Pokemon like Croagunk and Grimer. Other areas include a grassy meadow, an underground watery cavern, a snowy mountain, and desert plain too.
Fans expressed their excitement for the evolution of this beloved feature, from its translation from the DS to the Switch, to the expanded map size and Pokemon Hideaways. Some fans pointed out that the Hideaways also allow for Pokemon that didn't appear in the original to be capturable in this region. The lava area and expanded Fire-type roster in particular were brought to attention, as the original games had a low amount of Fire-type Pokemon that could be found in the region. With these features remade and evolved, fans have a lot to look forward to in the remakes.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will release on November 19 for the Nintendo Switch.
