When the PS5 DualSense was revealed, one of its more intriguing features was the inclusion of haptic feedback. In simple terms, this simply means that the controller will have a rumble function, but the DualSense’s haptic feedback will be much more advanced than anything gamers are used to at this point.

A recent tech manual has revealed more information about the DualSense, including its capabilities in helping developers create games. PS5 games aim to stimulate many of the players’ senses, and this new tool will help even inexperienced devs create immersive experiences through haptic feedback provided by the DualSense.

Sony claims it has created a “haptic vibration waveform design environment” that automatically creates rumble patterns for the DualSense based on in game audio. With this tool, developers will be able to include haptic feedback even with only small teams and without a great deal of experience in that field of work.

Like haptic feedback itself, it remains to be seen just how impactful this will be on the gaming experience, but this should give developers a lot of options when designing their games. Quiet noises may cause the control to vibrate gently, perhaps only in specific areas of the controller, while louder ones like in game explosions may cause sudden and intense vibrations throughout the player’s grip. When paired with the DualSense’s adaptive triggers, players should feel greater immersion as their sense of touch is stimulated just as much as vision and hearing is.

Naturally, developers that decide to go the extra mile and customize each and every vibration within a game to fit the moment will definitely be able to create more compelling experiences, but the inclusion of this feature means that most likely nearly every PS5 game will make use of haptic feedback. If it is truly as easy to use as Sony claims, it wouldn’t make much sense for developers to skip over this feature even if they are releasing their game on multiple platforms. Hopefully this will result in an overall increase in quality of games on the PS5 as a whole.

It is interesting to think that a controller could provide this much power to developers, and it will be even more interesting to see how it truly affects the gaming experience. Players want to know whether haptic feedback will really be a big deal or not, but they’ll have to wait until this holiday season for the PS5.
