Rumor: Metroid Prime Trilogy Port for Switch is Complete

Almost as popular as the endless Switch “Pro” rumors over the past few years has been the similarly prolific scuttlebutt that proclaims a port of Metroid Prime Trilogy is coming to Nintendo’s hybrid console. It makes sense: the Prime series is wildly popular among the Nintendo faithful, so to produce a port of this Wii classic seems like a no-brainer. Yet, as convincing as the rumors have tended to be, nothing has come from all the conjecture—and there is apparently a reason for that.

In a recent Giant Bomb broadcast, VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb says that the port of Metroid Prime Trilogy “is done and Nintendo is holding it.” Why? Here’s the lowdown:

I think that game is sitting in their pocket for whenever Nintendo decides it’s the right time, and Nintendo’s done this a lot recently so it’s not unusual, it’s not a sign of some bad thing happening, it’s not a sign of a lack of faith in Metroid… Nintendo can afford [to sit on it] and that’s how they’re treating it.

Grubb expands on this point, going on to add that he feels there are issues with getting QA testing done thanks to the continued challenge of working while the COVID-19 virus still impacting Japan and the rest of the world. Further compounding the issue, according to Grubb, is that Metroid Prime Trilogy is “definitely going to be a marketing beat for Metroid Prime 4.” Meaning that Metroid Prime Trilogy is likely being seen as a bridge to both prep and build hype for consumers closer to the launch of Metroid Prime 4.

Metroid Prime 4 has seen a number of delays since its initial announcement. Assuming that development is now moving more smoothly, if Grubb’s claims are true then whenever Metroid Prime 4 is close to or fully completed, Metroid Prime Trilogy will be taking point at that time. Do you hope this rumor ends up being true? Tell us in the comments!
