A listing for “Ninja Gaiden Sigma Trilogy” allegedly appeared on Hong Kong publisher Game Source’s website, seemingly a collection of 3D Ninja Gaiden games for PlayStation 4.
The rumor comes via Reddit, with user kokokko416 sharing a supposed image from Game Source’s website. While archives of the webpage show an error page (the same as though a nonsensical URL was used), the image shows a listing for “Ninja Gaiden Σ Trilogy.” The URL is consistent with other listings on the website.
The games included are written as Ninja Gaiden Σ, Ninja Gaiden Σ2, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razer Edge. Produced by Koei Tecmo, the game would be released in March 2021 on PlayStation 4.
Ninja Gaiden (2004) was later ported from Xbox to PlayStation 3 as Ninja Gaiden Sigma in 2007, with enhanced visuals, new modes, and weapons. “Σ” is the Greek letter for sigma.
The 3D action-adventure reboot of the 1990s series inspired Ninja Gaiden II (2008) Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (2009), Ninja Gaiden 3 (2012) and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge (2012). Each “Sigma” version (including Razor’s Edge) featured enhancements and new gameplay additions, almost all typically being on PlayStation or Xbox hardware.
One curiosity however is the screencap using the Japanese logo of the classic series from the SNES. Ninja Gaiden Trilogy was released on the SNES in 1995, a collection of the original Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.
While the collection could be enhanced remakes of the SNES titles (in the same vein as the other Sigma enhancements) the fact the listing mentions Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge would make them the 3D titles. The original Ninja Gaiden III was called Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom.
Speaking to IGN in February, Ninja Gaiden developer Team Ninja’s Fumihiko Yasuda (director of Nioh 2) stated the team were eager to work on a new Ninja Gaiden game.
“The core members of the team that worked on Ninja Gaiden want to make a new game. We are aware that some fans wanted Ninja Gaiden more than Nioh 2. Now we see a lot of ninja games like [Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice] as well, and we see a lot of good inspirations in those games, so we hope to deliver some good news one day.”
Team Ninja’s involvement with the supposed Ninja Gaiden Sigma Trilogy was not mentioned in the screencap. We will keep you informed as we learn more.
