Bandai Namco Entertainment have revealed more information about the world and enemies of “brainpunk” action JRPG Scarlet Nexus.
As previously reported, the game is set in a distant future where the city of New Himuka is under siege from mutants called the Others. Players control Yuito Sumeragi, a new recruit for the Other Suppression Force, that is tasked with using their powerful psionic abilities to protect humanity.
While the prior developer diary provided an overview of the game and its premise, the latest two parts delve more into the world and the major antagonists; the Others.
The game takes place in the nation of New Himuka, a country so big “the concept of ‘overseas’ doesn’t even exist.” Despite it’s large size, the location of Togetsu seems to be opposed to them somehow.
The game has a 90s’ futuristic aesthetic, keeping some elements that will seem familiar to the real world. The people of New Himuka use their brains to interact with the Psynet for technology and services. It is also hinted that every brain being connect like this causes a troubling issue that is part of the game’s story.
The Others are beings that rain down from the Extinction Belt fog in the sky to eat human brains. They seem to lack any consciousness and attack humans on instinct, and are comparable to earthquakes in Japan; a natural disaster that could be a daily occurrence, and predicted with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
The OSF is the group tasked with stopping the Others, and the player makes up one of their number. As such, people dying from the Others is actually a rare occurrence. The reason their bodies are made of organic and everyday inorganic parts is part of their background.
