Scarlet Nexus was initially announced in May and became the first PS5 game available for pre-order on Amazon. Since then, gamers have been introduced to more information about the game, and Bandai Namco has created a new word to describe the game: “brainpunk.”
Recently, Scarlet Nexus showed off the anime-action RPG game’s aesthetic through a new trailer during the opening night of Gamescom. With this new trailer, fans of the game can get a better glimpse into this world, the monsters that inhabit it, and why the game has been dubbed with this new world. The game’s development team gave a virtual presentation to more aspects of Scarlet Nexus.

While some many say that the game gives off a cyberpunk feel, the game takes a new spin on the concept. The Bandai Namco development team came up with the term “brainpunk” to describe the game as most of the technological advancements have to do directly with the characters’ minds. Instead of having smartphones, these characters can do most of the functions of these electronic devices by using the technology implanted in their brains, which is called PsyNet.
Because of PsyNet, the characters in the game are mentally linked. The brain-linked technology also gives them special abilities that can be used to fight against enemies that the game presents the players with. The protagonist Yuito Sumirage can also use the abilities of his squadmates as well through this device, causing red tubes to appear on a soldier’s back while in combat. This mechanic also contributed to the name of the game, Scarlet Nexus.
Yuito is a part of the Others Suppression Force, which targets and eliminates the enemies of the game, known as Others. These monsters are shown to take unusual forms that combine organic and man-made objects in startling ways. Others take after zombies in the sense that they eat humans brains, which may have something to do with the connectivity that the humans share through their PsyNet technology. Others seem to literally rain down on the game’s city of New Himuka due to a fog-like “Extinction Belt,” which players will be able to see for themselves on consoles such as the PlayStation 5.
With both the mind-linked technology that the main characters use to the monsters’ hunger for brains, it makes sense that the Bandai Namco game would fit the moniker “brainpunk.” While humanity may be so tightly connected to each other’s minds, Scarlet Nexus wants to try exploring the idea of loneliness, even though other people are essentially inside the characters’ heads. Fans will have to see if the game achieves this when it comes out for current and next-gen consoles.
