You cannot verbally communicate within Sky: Children Of Light, unless you leave messages at a chat area. This is why expressions come in so handy. Expressions are different actions that you can learn each time you rescue a Trapped Spirit in the game. Once you have learned them once, you can use them throughout the game and you can upgrade them by the Spirit's shop.

Some of the expressions can be used just to have a bit of fun in the Realms whilst playing with your friends, such as the Fainting expression. This one is particularly funny to do in Golden Wastelands when you come across a spooky moment. However, they can be used as crucial communication tools when you're trying to solve a puzzle or indicate that you have found something.
This list compiles all of the expressions that you are rewarded when you rescue a Spirit.
Isle Of Dawn
There are three Spirits in Isle of Dawn. You will need to rescue a few from Daylight Prairie then come back here to get all of the Spirits and the expressions that go with them. When you meet a Spirit at the end of the Realm or in the Social Area after you complete the Realm, you can access their shop and purchase things off of them. You can purchase upgrades for your expressions there using your Candles or Hearts.

When a Spirit gives you an expression, it is always at the lowest level.

Pointing Candlemaker | Pointing Expression – Level 1 |
Ushering Stargazer | Ushering Expression – Level 1 |

Daylight Prairie
There are eight Spirits in Daylight Prairie. Some are definitely easier to reach than others, so if you find them too hard, you can always come back to them at a later date. All of the Spirits in this Realm will give you expressions apart from one. One Spirit will give you a call sound, so when you press A to call out to other players, it will sound different.
It's extremely helpful to collect Winged Lights on your journey as they upgrade your flight ability. You end up needing to fly quite a lot across each Realm.

Hidden Forest
There are eight Spirits in Hidden Forest too. These ones can be a bit tricky to get to as you need to protect your light from the rain as it drains your abilities. They will all give you expressions apart from one, who will give you a call sound instead. To see what ones you have and to equip new ones, press X to bring up the side menu. Then, press R to switch to the next screen. Here you will be able to see your call sounds and you just need to click on one to equip it.

If you ever get overwhelmed in this Realm then you can always press the X button to bring up a side menu. If you click the archway button on this, it will take you back to your Home from your most recent save point. Here, you can take a breather and either try the Realm again from the start or return to it where you left off using the Return Shrine.

Valley Of Triumph
There are seven Spirits in Valley Of Triumph. This Realm is slightly different from the others as you slide around for most of it. This by no means makes the level easy. It makes it much harder to spot the hidden Spirits and little areas where Winged Lights may be hiding.
The Spirits in this Realm will give you Expressions but one of them will give you a call sound.

Golden Wasteland
There are six Spirits in Golden Wasteland and thankfully, they're all straightforward to find when you know how. The problem is, this Realm is where you meet the big baddies for the first time and you need to contend with them whilst trying to free the Spirits.

This Realm is much easier to do if you have found all of the Winged Lights in previous ones. It means your cape will be powerful enough to make a quick exit if you need it.

Vault Of Knowledge
There are five Spirits in Vault Of Knowledge. This Realm is the last one where you will find any Spirits and it's extremely fun to rescue these ones.
After the chaos of the previous Realm, there are no baddies to be found in this one which means you can enjoy yourself whilst exploring the many levels in this one.
