Sony: PS4 to PS5 Game Save Data Transfers Are a “Developer Decision”

ps5

Sony recently shared details for their PS4 to PS5 upgrade plans, however there are concerns as to how many features are mandatory and which aren’t. One such feature is game save data transferring between PS4 to PS5, which Sony has confirmed isn’t required.

In a follow-up blog, Sony addressed the top questions and concerns fans had, including transferring game save data. Sony noted save data transferring is a “developer decision,” and as such won’t be mandatory for all cross-platform games.

This has already been pointed out with games like Yakuza: Like a Dragon and DiRT 5, both noted as not supporting cross-gen save transfers. Microsoft’s cross-gen system, Smart Delivery, also supports save data transfers however they too aren’t making it a mandatory feature for all third party games, only their own first-party titles.

Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launch on November 10th, worldwide. PlayStation 5 is launching on November 12th in the United States, Japan, etc, and on November 19th in other worldwide regions.
