As the series sells over 37million units worldwide, Naughty Dog vows to share real information on The Last Of Us multiplayer game this year.

It’s nearly been 10 years since The Last Of Us released for the PlayStation 3. In that time, it has become one of Sony’s most prestigious franchises despite only consisting of two games.

Fans already have the live-action TV series to look forward to, which is scheduled to start airing in just over a week’s time. However, developer Naughty Dog has begun teasing a ‘big year to come’ for the franchise.

For starters, it’s promising to share some actual details about its multiplayer spin-off. For the time being, though, fans have to make do with a second piece of concept art.

The art depicts an abandoned cruise ship, one that’s rusted over and looks to have somehow crashed through a road. It’s unclear whether this ship is a potential environment players will get to explore or if it will just be part of the background.

Hopefully, Naughty Dog will have an actual trailer or at least some in-engine footage to show off before the end of the year. Perhaps a bit closer to The Last Of Us’ actual anniversary in June.

‘Later this year we will begin to offer you some details on our ambitious The Last Of Us multiplayer game,’ reads a blog post from the studio.

‘With a team led by Vinit Agarwal, Joe Pettinati, and Anthony Newman, the project is shaping up to be a fresh, new experience from our studio, but one rooted in Naughty Dog’s passion for delivering incredible stories, characters, and gameplay.’

Fans have technically known about the project since 2019 when Naughty Dog decided to cut multiplayer out of The Last Of Us Part 2 and make it a separate game.

The studio never had anything to say about it until last June during Summer Game Fest, where all it had to show was one piece of concept art.

At the time, though, it said that the game would be just as big as Naughty Dog’s single-player projects.

Job listings and new hires have also implied that the game will be free-to-play with microtransactions, which could potentially make it one of the 10 live service titles Sony wants out by 2026.

Elsewhere in the blog post, Naughty Dog reveals that, as of December 2022, The Last Of Us games have collectively sold over 37 million units worldwide.

Fans are also reminded that the PC port of The Last Of Us Part 1 releases on March 3, and that the coming year will offer some ‘fun surprises’ as well.
