It was an open secret that some form of video game representation would make its way into the Tokyo 2020 Olympics thanks to a cameo by Mario at the conclusion of the 2016 Rio competition. While the Tokyo Olympics were pushed back to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they’re officially underway now, with the opening ceremonies having taken place this past Friday.
As many noticed while watching the Parade of Nations, where the teams from each competing country enter the stadium for the lighting of the Olympic torch, video games did indeed make an appearance—in the form of music. Tune from series like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Sonic the Hedgehog, and much more were played during the procession. Here’s a look at a list of what was played:

Sadly, Nintendo was omitted from the music selection, but regardless, there was quite a lot of solid, wonderful tunes pulled from numerous other companies’ catalogues. It’s wonderful how proud Japan is of its video game history—let’s hope we start to see other countries do much the same thing for future Olympic games.
