Twitch Streamer DrLupo Signs Massive Exclusivity Deal With YouTube

DrLupo has had a strong association with Twitch for the bulk of his career, with the content creator gaining a massive audience on the platform. It may come as a surprise, then, that the streamer has signed an exclusivity deal with YouTube, which will see the streamer swap sides to Twitch’s biggest competitor. And while some ardent Twitch supporters may be sad to see the streamer go, he has some good reasons for signing on with the platform.

DrLupo announced the deal on Twitter, sharing a brief video detailing his rise to fame before revealing that his work will continue exclusively on YouTube Gaming. The video specifically points out how essential games like Apex Legends were to DrLupo’s success, as well as detailing some of the charity work and special events that the streamer has been involved in. That includes playing Among Us with US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a highlight of DrLupo’s career.

In an interview with the Washington Post, DrLupo provided some additional insight into why he decided to make the transition to YouTube Gaming, with the primary reasoning revolving around how time-consuming Twitch had become – time that DrLupo would rather be spending with his family. “Family time is crazy important,” the streamer said, going on to state that he would often work 60-70 hours a week while streaming on Twitch.

With YouTube’s exclusivity deal, however, DrLupo is now “secure for life,” which will afford him more time with his family. Of course, DrLupo still plans to stream on YouTube Gaming, though he will place a bigger emphasis on pre-recorded content with higher production value, according to the interview. The streamer has some trips coming up, which should give him ample opportunity to produce vlogs.

But DrLupo’s desire to move platforms was motivated by more than just YouTube’s offer and his desire to spend more time with his family. DrLupo also pointed to Twitch’s ongoing hate raid issues as a reason to make the jump, as he wants to prove that other platforms are also viable for streamers. YouTube is a bigger platform than Twitch – and will afford DrLupo new areas to grow – but Twitch traditionally dominates streaming viewership.

DrLupo’s move will, inevitably, be a shakeup for both platforms. It’s one of the biggest deals since Ninja signed an exclusivity contract with Mixer. Ultimately, that didn’t shake out for Mixer, as the platform has since shut down, but it came as a shock to many of the streamer’s fans. Undoubtedly, fans will be similarly surprised by this move.
