Dragon Quest is officially 35 this year and in celebration of the venerated franchise Square Enix put together a livestream. This broadcast revealed a ton of info about what to expect in terms of new games. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s start with the broadcast itself:
Here are the broad strokes of what was unveiled:
- Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate: The next installment in the series is expected to have a darker tone than previous entries. There will apparently be changes coming to the battle system as well as the ability to make a variety of choices throughout the story. Not much else is known beyond this, however, as the game is still in prototype form.
- Dragon Quest Treasures: An untraditional RPG experience starring Erik and Mia from Dragon Quest XI.
- Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake: This is a remake of Dragon Quest III that features visuals comprised of a hybrid of 2D pixel art and three-dimensional rendering to produce a unique sense of depth.
- Dragon Quest Keshkeshi: A mobile title coming to Japan first, with a worldwide release TBA.
- Dragon Quest X Online: Episode six is coming to the game. An offline version of the game is coming, as well.
In terms of which of these projects might come to Switch (including that mobile game—Square Enix has already set the precedent with Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition), it really could be any of them. XII is probably the longshot given it’s the next entry and likely to be aiming to take advantage of the horsepower of PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series consoles, but with a “Switch Pro” being rumored for years now, who knows—Nintendo fans might be able to get in on the fun.
That’s a lot of Dragon Quest news! Which of these games stands out to you? Tell us online and in the comments!
