Id Software has announced that Doom Eternal is getting a single-player horde mode in place of the previously planned Invasion mode.
The announcement comes from id Software's official Twitter account, where they released a statement regarding the development of Doom Eternal and its future updates.

Within this statement, the biggest piece of news is the fact that the previously-revealed Invasion mode is cancelled and will be replaced with a single-player horde mode.
The statement reads, "As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game; however, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition… With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode."
Doom fans have been wondering about the state of the Invasion Mode since it was initially showcased during the game's first gameplay reveal over two years ago. Invasion would have allowed other players to randomly invade another player's match as a demon and attempt to kill them.
Id Software's statement here says that the main reason behind the cancellation of the mode is due to covid, but it's also possible that the feature wasn't worth implementing so long after the game actually released. The implementation made sense when most players would be going through the campaign for the first time, but makes less sense now when most of the players will have finished the game.
In response to the horde mode announcement id Software said, "We're confident this horde mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenge you're looking for in the game."
The statement continues to talk about how id is looking to implement more Battlemode maps and ends the statement by promising that more information is on the way during QuakeCon later this year.
Another thing worth mentioning from the statement is the confirmation that Part Two of the Ancient Gods DLC will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch later this year, although no specific date was announced.
