Ninja Gaiden Master Collection’s PC Port Receives Update With Graphical Options

A little over a month after its release on Steam, the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection has received an update that adds in a range of graphical options that users can tweak. I can't believe that in 2021, a PC port has to receive updates with proper graphical options, but that's just the world we live in.

The update was very unceremoniously announced on the Steam support page for the compilation with very few details. As part of Version 1.0.0.2, players will now be able to toggle the following options: Display Mode, Resolution, V-Sync, Triple Buffering, Anti-Aliasing, Depth of Field, and Display Shadows. To PC players, those are pretty self-explanatory, but we'll break it down for you.

Display Mode refers to the ability to run the game in a window, in fullscreen, or fullscreen windows (a unique mode that has the properties of fullscreen while being a window). Resolution will finally let players change between 720p, 1080p, and 4K in-game without having to resort to a command line tweak. V-Sync will lock the game's framerate to your display's refresh rate, though this collection is locked at 60 fps and will not support anything higher.

Triple buffering and anti-aliasing are similar, though the former handles texture filtering and the latter is geared towards reducing jagged edges. These two options were likely included for lower-end machines as any high-end one would be fine with them at max. Depth of field handles how closer objects are displayed during cutscenes and such, with distant actors being blurred to give a camera effect. Finally, display shadows…displays shadows.

It might seem like these are basic options and that's because they are. When Ninja Gaiden Master Collection was released, there was a rather hilarious post on the Steam store page that explained what command line to enter to change resolutions. That was the closest users had to an option, though it wasn't even included in-game. Considering how Nioh 2 (another Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo release) had a rather solid PC port, it was very strange to see Ninja Gaiden get lower than basic treatment.

This latest update doesn't magically fix Master Collection, but it does seem that Koei Tecmo isn't going to let it languish on the platform. Hopefully, the future is bright for this port.
