Death’s Door Finds Unique Ways To Make Its Signposts Hilarious

Is there anything more satisfying than slicing through a sign in a video game? One of the best parts of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was charging up a sword attack and tearing through one of those wooden signposts, watching the broken pieces fly. Well, Acid Nerve’s newly released Death’s Door makes slicing through those signs even more satisfying, as the slashed sign’s text is also altered.

Over on Twitter, @TristanACooper posted a short clip of him slicing through a sign on Death’s Door. First, he walks up to the sign, which helpfully offers directions stating, “This way to The Stranded Sailor…”. Clearly unhappy with the sign, the player then slashes through the wooden marker cleanly, cutting the top piece off. Then, he reads the sign again, only this time it only shows the bottom half of the phrase because the top has been removed.

This little detail is so incredibly satisfying. Mainly because it makes the player’s actions have consequences, adding a sense of reality to the journey of the game. Plus, it is just cool to chop up a sign and see that effect the actual writing. Unlike in Ocarina of Time, where slicing a sign really just destroys it altogether.

Death’s Door is a recently released title from Acid Nerve that resembles other top-down action games like Supergiant’s Hades and Bastion. Within the game, players take control of a crow whose mission is to reap the souls of the dead until one of the assigned souls is stolen. Then the game becomes a journey to track down the soul-stealing thief. Death's Door is a wonderful blend of humor and style that works well as both an adventure and narrative.

These little details are what make a game truly enjoyable. While it is just a simple action to slash the sign in two, the fact that there are actual effects of that simple action make the game feel more alive and gives the player a sense of agency in the world of the game. Death’s Door is currently available for PC and Xbox One, and Series X|S. Unfortunately, there is no news on whether the game will make it to PlayStation or Switch anytime soon.
