Indie publisher DotEmu has announced that an open beta for Windjammers 2 will be available across PC, PS4, and PS5 starting tomorrow, August 11, 2021. Running until August 22, players on Sony's consoles will be able to face off against each other while PC users will have their own dedicated servers for competition. You'll find access to ranked matches across four different arenas that include sandy beaches, a roaring stadium, and a towering rooftop.
A new video posted on DotEmu's YouTube channel covers the basics of how Windjammers plays for those new to the game. Think of it as a competitive fighting game mixed with ultimate frisbee. Two athletes face-off in a small arena and attempt to score goals by tossing a frisbee into the opponent's net. With a mixture of different commands, you'll toss the disc to try and fake out your foe and score a goal.

Released in 1994 by Data East for the Neo Geo AES in arcades, the original Windjammers has gained cult classic status over the years thanks to its dedicated fans. Never quite reaching mainstream awareness due to being available only on SNK's platform, the title was given a second shot at life back in 2017 when DotEmu released ports on the PS4 and PS Vita.
That's great, too, because Windjammers really is a special game. Combining all of the intense elements of fighting games with a funny, sports adjacent package, the series deserves a chance to shine on modern platforms. Windjammers 2 was already better in its previous demos, so here's hoping the final version nails its concept.
