Masahiro Sakurai Talks To Katsuhiro Harada About Super Smash Bros. Fans And Memes

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans are never short of requests for new fighters, and are always on the lookout for hints on who the next one will be. This is something that series creator Masahiro Sakurai is very aware of, as he revealed in an interview with Bandai Namco's Katsuhiro Harada.

Speaking on Harada's YouTube channel, Sakurai opened the talk by lamented that he cannot do things like this more often. "Because of the way Smash Bros. is made, I can't make connections with other games or promote them", said Sakurai. "If I connect with other games, people will think that game's characters will be added."

Speaking with Harada about how rumours spread in the gaming community, he went on to say that: "Any small thing you say will spread as truth." Harada adds that due to Sakurai not posting much on social media, fans are more likely to cling to anything he says. Sakurai agrees: "I'd just like to say, 'give me a break.'"

Later in the interview, Sakurai also said that he feels some people view him as a "tyrant", since he decides which characters get in the game.

However, Harada disagreed with his assessment, citing a meme he found which compared to the two of them. In the meme, there's a screenshot of Sakurai thanking fans for their support, assuring them that the team is working hard to release Smash Ultimate. This is juxtaposed by a picture of Harada, wearing a shirt that simply reads: "don't ask me for shit."

Sakurai and Harada similarly discussed the infamous "never ask me for anything again" meme – which Sakurai is not a big fan of. "I want them to stop using my face or icon to say what they want to say. Even if it's a joke."

There you have it, folks. Let the man play his games, and don't send him any Smash memes.
