Although modern sports titles offer shockingly authentic gameplay and stunning visual quality, it goes without saying that a lot of fans look at their retro equivalents as being considerably better. The original Madden games are often touted as being far more fun than the franchise’s current annual offerings, while fans have often cited NBA games as getting more and more frustrating as the years press on.
However, It seems the NHL franchise might potentially be trying to offer fans the best of both worlds this year, with a new listing on Gematsu referring to an as of yet unannounced remaster titled NHL 94 Rewind. The game – which has been classified in Australia – has been the source of a lot of speculation over the last few days, with many wondering whether the title might be bundled with the upcoming NHL 21.

The listing itself confirms the game’s title alongside giving it a G rating. It seems wise to imagine that if the remaster does exist it will be a part of NHL 21’s marketing push, especially with the game remaining unannounced but still receiving a listing by the Australian classification board. For those unfamiliar with the seminal Hockey video game, NHL 94 is seen by many as one of the greatest iterations of the franchise to date, with the title offering a more arcadey vision of the series than its contemporary peers. Interestingly, the game has been brought back to modern consoles before, making its way into NHL 14 as a feature titled “NHL 94 Anniversary Mode.”
It seems wise to imagine the remaster is linked to the next game in the franchise, especially as NHL 21 only began the brunt of its new marketing campaign yesterday. For those who didn’t catch it, EA announced several things about the game, namely revealing its cover star to be Washington Capitals captain and Stanley Cup winner Alexander Ovechkin. Alongside the huge announcement, the game’s release date was announced to be October 16, while a new trailer was uploaded that delved deeper into Ovechkin’s career and the reason he’s been chosen to grace the cover of NHL 21.
Of course, it’s also worth taking this reveal with a pinch of salt until EA sees fit to confirm it, with some pointing out that it doesn’t seem like a move that the company would usually pull. That hasn’t stopped fans from dreaming about the iconic Hockey video game returning to screens once again, so hopefully, NHL 94 Rewind will actually be coming to consoles alongside its 2021 equivalent this October.
