The Friday Inbox argues that Battlefield 2042 is not the disaster some are painting it as, while one reader is upset at the delisting of Titanfall.

Coming soon
Now that they’re only a week away, what games are we hoping are going to be at The Game Awards this year? There don’t seem to have been any specific leaks yet but they’re saying that the new reveals will be in the double figures. Most of that will be indie stuff and other minor games, I’m sure, but it sounds like there’s a good chance for some major reveals. After all, Geoff Keighley did get the Elden Ring exclusive during the summer.

Could we finally see Metroid Prime 4 or a release date for Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2? Maybe some gameplay for Fable or the Perfect Dark reboot? Sony hasn’t announced anything for ages, so maybe they’ll use it to announce some new games or show off Spider-Man 2? Microsoft has been gaining ground the last few months, with no pushback, so it seems possible to me.

It’s just a shame the thing is so late in the day. They could at least put it on a Friday or Saturday so that Europe could stay up and watch it. Why is it on a Thursday? We’ll probably never get an answer to that but at least we’ll find out about the games soon.

Legal obligation
Have to agree with Dorack about Microsoft quickly showing its true colours as soon as it gets a sniff of success. He’s right to point out every company does it but that’s no excuse for any of them. The thing is they were getting like that already with the microtransactions for Forza (the new Forza Motorsport has been quietly forgotten, with rumours suggesting it was a free-to-play gacha fest) and then they realised they had to get on fans’ good side so they stopped.

Now they figure they’re on the up and they’re right back with the same ideas. Even the online-only stuff from the start of the Xbox One era is slowly creeping back.

I don’t blame Microsoft though. They’re a business, they’re legally required (really!) to make as much money as possible for their shareholder no matter what. The fault is with gamers who support and encourage this sort of thing. That goes double for sports games like FIFA and NBA 2K.

RPG while you wait
Considering how long the wait for Elder Scrolls 6 is going to be I’m surprised there’s never been any talk of remastering or remaking Morrowind. It’s the oldest entry that is still relevant today, I feel, but the tech is very old and it definitely needs a makeover. Many people still consider it the best in the series and while I haven’t played it in a very long time I definitely remember it as being a great game.

I think Bethesda may be worried that it’s a much deeper, much more complicated game than Oblivion and Skyrim, so maybe they don’t want to show themselves up. But that comes at a great cost of accessibility so I think people will see that overall the change has been for the good.

I’d certainly be more interested in it than the 100th re-release of Skyrim. Heck, I’d settle for an Oblivion remaster as a compromise.

The disappearing games
I find the idea of a game like Titanfall being taken out of circulation to be very troubling. There doesn’t seem to be any reason for it other than Respawn don’t want the trouble of maintaining, so they make sure no-one can play it except the people that already have a copy.

I wonder how Microsoft feel about something that is still an Xbox console exclusive being all but erased from existence? That certainly doesn’t fit with all their talk about game preservation. It might not be their game but it has a strong connection to Xbox and surely they could’ve stepped in.

Forza Motorsport 7 being cancelled after just four years is even worse. I can’t pretend to care because I don’t like that sort of game, but I sure do care in terms of games just disappearing at the whim of publishers.

Adverts within adverts
I’m glad GC pointed out the horrible excesses of The Rock recording an advert for his energy drink which is also secretly an advert for Fortnite. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but the whole thing was just kind of revolting. I know people like The Rock but I get the feeling there’s nothing he wouldn’t shill for money and I imagine sitting on some marketing person’s list of celebs who will promote absolutely anything for the right amount of money.

Anyway, Fortnite… You can’t argue with that level of success but if there were any secrets in that leaked advert I didn’t understand a thing. I wish islands did work like that though, we could all run to one end and tip it over whenever we want!

Battlefield response
I’ve got to say I really don’t understand the complaints about Battlefield 2042. Maybe it’s different on PC, or PC gamers have a different view of the series (which I think might be the case) but I’ve really enjoyed it so far and so have all my friends. Yes, there aren’t that many maps and 128-player matches doesn’t really work but 64 definitely does and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it.

In my opinion it’s a great game and a lot more interesting than Call Of Duty: Vanguard, which just seems to be exactly the same thing we’ve seen a dozen times before. Almost literally given the setting.

I’d also point out that the updates and fixes have come very quickly, with three major ones since launch, which is night and day compared to the response to something like Cyberpunk 2077 from last year. My prediction is that Battlefield 2042 will be embraced as a great game by this time next year and the launch problems quickly forgotten. This doesn’t even seem as bad as Battlefield 4 at this point.

Forbidden sequel
Bloodborne has been mentioned a few times in the Inbox lately and it always gets me sad when I realise that we’re probably never going to get a sequel. Now, the main reason for this is probably some boring politics to do with it being a PlayStation exclusive and Sony owning the IP but I really wish all concerned could sort something out.

Even after having played the Elden Ring beta I am absolutely convinced that Bloodborne is the best video game ever made. The atmosphere, the level design, the sheer depth of secrets within secrets, and the slowly unravelled story… it’s literally perfect. The combat is great too, although you could argue less distinctive than the rest, but that’s just From’s style. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to make sequel.

The problem is you need Hidetaka Miyazaki to make the game and if Elden Ring is even halfway successful I’m sure they’ll have him working on DLC and a sequel straight away. Maybe he can fit it in between but I fear they’d have to get someone else in to work on it. I really don’t see who though. Platinum don’t have the reserve for a Soulsborne and I’ve seen nothing to suggest Bluepoint have the imagination to make games themselves.

I hope something gets worked out though because I miss the hunt. If Bayonetta can get two sequels why not Bloodborne!

Inbox also-rans
Apologies if I didn’t make it clear in my letter but I did not get an Xbox Series X console due to all the places I checked being out of stock.

I see that Moss Book 2 is being released in the spring. Really enjoyed the first one. I am not going to watch the trailer and just play it when it comes out as not to spoil the story or gameplay.

Just a quick heads up for anyone interested – I know GC are fans. XCOM 2 expansion War Of The Chosen is currently £3.49 on PSN, giving it a whopping 90% discount. Won’t get many 10/10 games at that price.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Straybe, who asks what’s the best acting performance you’ve ever seen in a video game?

Even if you don’t know the name of the actor involved what character do you think is the best acted in terms of the voice and/or motion capture performance? What was their best scene (please try to avoid spoilers) and how do you think it compares to a performance in live action media?

How much do you tend to notice good or bad acting in a video game and how important is it to you enjoying a game? Also, are there any that were bad enough to put you off an otherwise good game?
