Following several convincing leaks and rumors, Pokemon fans are convinced that they’ll be returning to Diamond and Pearl in a large-scale remake sometime in the next few years. It’s not entirely unbelievable either, with the game’s previous mainline entries, Pokemon Sun and Moon, being followed by remakes of Ruby and Sapphire back in 2014.
However, a new leak claims that, while Pokemon fans are on the right lines, the next major entry in the storied franchise won’t be a remake of Diamond and Pearl. That being said, the game will apparently still take place in the Sinnoh region, meaning it could act as something of a successor to the incredibly popular Generation 4 releases.

Of course, it goes without saying that fans should take the forthcoming rumor with a grain of salt, especially as Pokemon seems to be more focused on Sword and Shield’s DLC rather than the next game in the franchise. It’s also sourced from 4chan, which has a history of sharing baseless rumors. That being said, the leak claims that the next two games in the franchise will be known as Pokemon Gears of Eternity and Orbs of Infinity, following the same format as previous mainline entries in the franchise and offering two alternate copies of the game. As aforementioned, trainers will journey back to the Sinnoh region, although things will be slightly different this time around.
For one, gyms will be stripped from the game, although there will be type specialists that fulfill the same role. Initially, this does seem like an unrealistic departure from the series coveted formula, however, the games have been trying to distance themselves more from the typical gym archetype first introduced in the originals. Sword and Shield, for example, replaced gyms with arena battles, while Sun and Moon offered “Island Challenges” instead. The leak does claim that the Elite Four will return though, and type specialists will allegedly be split into two teams, with one using Megas and the other using Dynamax.
Although it seems wise to assume that the leak is false until Pokemon sees fit to comment more on the series’ next entry, it no doubt starts an interesting conversation about what fans would like to see from future entries in the franchise. For all the praise Sword and Shield received, it seemed many had pressing issues with the game, noting that the formula is quickly becoming stale and uninteresting. Others were quick to level criticism at the titles’ low difficulty and lack of visual quality as well. Hopefully, whatever Pokemon’s next release is, it will acknowledge and look to fix these flaws.
