Capcom recently announced that this week’s Developer Diary update for Monster Hunter World would be its last, leading fans to believe that its next round of DLC would also be the last one. Now that the update has dropped, it’s been made official. That’s the bad news, but the good news is that the game will be going out with a bang.

Next week will be the one-year anniversary of the launch of MHW’s Iceborne expansion, and to celebrate, Capcom will be providing fans with all sorts of content over the next two months. According to the roadmap laid out for the rest of 2020, the party will start on September 5 with a special two-day Iceborne anniversary event, which will be followed by a series of weekly event quests throughout the month. These will coincide with a number of festivals, including the Winter Star Fest and Holiday Joy Fest that started last week.

Then, on October 1, the final free update for Iceborne, Title Update 5, will arrive, and with it will come a monster that has challenged players since the original Monster Hunter, Fatalis. With the update, players will once more be able to confront the deadly fire-breathing Elder Dragon in the ruins of Castle Schrade, utilizing siege weapons such as cannons and the Dragonator against it. Of course, players will be able to earn new weapons and armor from Fatalis, but since the dragon is effectively the final boss for Iceborne and MHW as a whole, they better be ready for one of the most difficult fights yet.

The Developer Diary touches upon how Fatalis wasn’t always guaranteed to appear in Iceborne. What cemented its appearance, according to executive director Kaname Fujioka, was the strong reaction to a piece of promotional art released last year for the franchise’s 15th anniversary, which included an updated model for Fatalis. “It completely went viral on the internet. It was a huge hit,” Fujioka said. “And we thought, ‘okay, we can’t not put it in the game now.’”

While Fatalis is headlining Title Update 5, players will also have a limited time hunt for an Arch-tempered version of Velkhana to look forward to in October. Additionally, Monster Hunter World will receive various other features over the next two months, such as a new Clutch Claw Boost ability, the unlocking of all layered armor sets, new items to meld, and a variety of gameplay improvements and bug fixes.

The sun may be setting soon for Monster Hunter World, but its success over the last two years has ensured that the series will continue. Capcom is already at work planning the next Monster Hunter game, and the series is getting a film adaptation next year, so it’s doubtful that fans will have to wait long after they fight Fatalis to get something new out of Monster Hunter.

Monster Hunter World is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
