Ubisoft’s upcoming title, Gods and Monsters, officially has a new name as of this morning. From here on out, the project will be referred to as Immortals Fenyx Rising instead. This confirms the recent leak claiming Gods and Monsters would change names. The reasoning behind the name change is unclear, but it was certainly a bold move as fan reaction seems mixed.

There’s been a good deal of hype surrounding Gods and Monsters since it was announced. With Ubisoft’s success in creating the Greek world in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, an entire game set in that culture’s mythical world from the same developers had many excited. Despite only the name changing, it seems some fans aren’t as excited for Immortals Fenyx Rising, though.

Of course, it isn’t all bad, as there’s still quite a bit of excitement and support for the new name. What’s more, there will also be new information announced at the upcoming Ubisoft Forward event on the night of September 10th.

There seem to be two major schools of thought in the comments regarding the name change. Many fans feel as though the name Gods and Monsters was good enough, and view this as a sort of “if it isn’t broken, don’tfix it” scenario. Ubisoft is getting a lot of heat from these fans, with some going so far as to call the new name unoriginal and generic, postulating on whether or not it will have some effect on sales. Of course, Immortals Fenyx Rising is much less generic than Gods and Monsters, but it is understandable why some fans aren’t happy with the name change.

On the other hand, there’s a vocal minority that don’t really care what the game is called, and instead are focused on the gameplay itself. To this group, it wouldn’t matter if the name was changed to something totally ridiculous, so long as the game reveal at Ubisoft Forward goes well, they’ll likely still purchase and enjoy the title. Ultimately, neither group is right or wrong, and most can agree that the name change is weird. Fenyx is the main character of the game, but fans don’t have much of a connection with them yet.

Even so, this much negative reaction from fans isn’t a good sign for Ubisoft, so it will be interesting to see if it decides to revert the name change or not. That seems unlikely, but in this day and age developers are listening to consumers more and more.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
