Super Mario Sunshine is arguably one of the best 3D Mario games ever released, but have you ever wondered what it might look like if it was ported across to the Game Boy Advance around the same time as its original GameCube release in 2002?
If you have, wonder no more – as a pixel artist known as ‘huttaburger’ on Twitter has recreated the game’s main hub isle, Delfino Plaza – reimagining what it would have possibly looked like on Nintendo’s 32-bit handheld system.
According to the artist, this “GBA port” would have been “kinda like the game” on GameCube, but not entirely. Back then, a perfectly mirrored port from console to handheld would have been unlikely, so it makes sense.
The only downside to all of this is that there’s no actual game here. If it has got you craving some fun in the sun though, Nintendo re-released Super Mario Sunshine on the Switch as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection in 2020, the only catch is it was a limited-time release, so it’s no longer purchasable on the eShop and physical copies may no longer be readily available.
The same artist has also done various other console to handheld pixel art adaptations based on the Sonic the Hedgehog series and more. In somewhat related news, last week a GBA emulator for Switch online was seemingly discovered, suggesting the return of GBA titles might not be far away.
