Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele reveal new Xbox exclusive game OD

The previously leaked horror game Overdose has turned out to be Hideo Kojima’s secret cloud computing project with Microsoft.

Despite Hideo Kojima being on stage for nearly 10 minutes, to announce new game OD, we now know less about the game than we did before The Game Awards started, including whether it even is a game at all.

Last year it was leaked that Kojima was working on a game called Overdose, with a brief snippet of gameplay footage showing a Silent Hill-esque scene of Margaret Qualley (Mama from Death Stranding) wandering around a run-down building and getting spooked by ghost-like figures.

Nothing like that was shown at The Game Awards, just actors Sophia Lillis (young Beverly in It), Hunter Schafer (Jules in Euphoria), and Udo Kier (just about everything, but let’s go with Yuri from Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2) reciting an increasingly ominous sounding children’s rhyme.

Lillis then gets scared by something that enters through a door, that can only be seen reflected in her eyes and… that’s it. The faces seem to be motion-captured, rather than real, but there’s no actual gameplay footage.

Exactly what OD is only became more confusing as Kojima had to insist that it was actually a game but, ‘at the same time a movie and at the same time a new form of media.’

He never used the word ‘horror’ but he did bring Get Out writer and director Jordan Peele on stage and claimed he was only one of many ‘legendary’ collaborators he was working with on the game.

Kojima has recently been showing off about meeting Nicolas Cage and Timothée Chalamet, so maybe they’re involved too. He was also supposed to be making Silent Hills with Guillermo del Toro, before Konami canned the project, so he’s a good bet too.

The other big mystery is why the game needs cloud-computing to work. Teaming up with Microsoft to use their tech was the first time anyone got wind of the project but there’s nothing in the leaked footage that suggests something that couldn’t be done with normal console technology.

Perhaps that was just a test but whatever OD is it’s probably going to be hard to understand even after Kojima starts explaining it. Although when that might be is also a mystery, as the game was given no release date or year.
