It’s hard to believe but Motive Studios’ Star Wars: Squadrons is out next week. The space combat title will see pilots of the New Republic’s Vanguard Squadron battling the Empire’s Titan Squadron. A campaign will explore both sides of the conflict but for long-term progression, the developer has outlined its system for daily challenges, Operations and whatnot.
Operations are eight week “cycles” which introduce new cosmetic rewards. They go hand in hand with challenges that bestow Glory for unlocking new cosmetics, ships and components (though Glory is also awarded after matches based one’s performance). Operation Challenges offer unique rewards available for a limited time and players can also manage their Fleet Battles rank. The latter is more of a competitive rank that’s decided after 10 placement matches with Maverick being the lowest and Galactic Ace the highest.
In the midst of all this is a player’s own level. The first 40 levels will provide Requisition Points for ship components, which should be enough to unlock everything. “Our goal with leveling isn’t that you’ll get more powerful as you level up, but rather that you’ll have more options available to you (via components) as you play.” The developer also reiterated that all progression, unlocks and rewards were earned only through playing the game.
Star Wars: Squadrons has gone gold ahead of its launch on October 2nd. It will release for Xbox One, PS4 and PC so stay tuned for more details.
