Despite having been announced over a year ago, we still haven’t heard much about Souls series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki’s next opus – Elden Ring. A new blurb from one of the heads of Xbox, however, gives us hope the game is progressing nicely.

Xbox head Phil Spencer has apparently played the game quite a bit, and he has nothing but praise for what he’s seen thus far. “I’ve seen actually quite a bit. I’ve played quite a bit” Spencer said to Gamespot.

He added, “I can’t tell you much other than, as somebody who’s played all of Miyazaki’s games over at least the last decade, this is clearly the most ambitious game that he’s done”

“I mean, I love his games, but seeing some of the gameplay mechanics stuff that he and the team are tackling this time, of the setting, working with another creator in terms of story. I love it,” the Xbox boss noted.

Elden Ring was set for a release this year across Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but it remains unclear how far along the game is – it could slip into 2021. Described as a totally new action-RPG by Miyazaki and Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring is poised as a From Software title “through and through”, but rich in fantasy and RPG action.

Here’s a rundown on the game, via From Software:

Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware, Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., is a fantasy action-RPG adventure set within a world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki—creator of the influential Dark Souls video game series; and George R.R. Martin—author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Danger and discovery lurk around every corner in FromSoftware’s largest game to-date.

Hidetaka Miyazaki, President and Game Director of FromSoftware Inc. known for directing critically-acclaimed games in beloved franchises including Armored Core, Dark Souls, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

As a writer-producer, he has worked on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and pilots that were never made.
