Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Nintendo have announced Super Mario Bros. themed clothes and items will be coming to Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The items are part of the Super Mario Bros. series 35th anniversary; and was teased in a prior update. The items in question seem to be Super Mushrooms, spinning coins (which seem to vanish for a short time when walked into), brick blocks, ? Blocks, Power Stars, Green Koopa Shells, Thwomps, 1-Up Mushrooms, giant mushrooms, Fire Flowers, and the Goal Pole.

There are also Warp Pipes, where two can be used for players to travel quickly around their island. What happens with more Warp Pipes was not specified. There are also costumes inspired by Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Peach.

While an update will come to the game March 1st (and will be available to buy via NookShoping), an update will need to be installed from February 25th. The blocks appear to be able to float in the air, and the mushrooms are referred to as Large or Small Mushroom Platforms. Whether players will be able to walk on these is unknown.

The success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons may make it a major series akin to Super Mario after its runaway success. The game sold 1.8 million physical units in its first three days on sale in Japan (making it the best opening week for a Nintendo Switch game), and analysts later claimed the game sold 5 million digital copies over March 2020 (more than any other console game in history).

Later it was revealed the game sold 11.77 million units in its first 11 days on sale, and 13.4 million in its first six weeks. In mid-May it had become the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game in Japan. It later became the best selling game in Japan’s first half of 2020, with over an estimated 5 million physical copies sold.

The game would later sell over 5.6 million units in Asia by August 2020, as well as outselling Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver in Japan. This made it the second best selling game in Japan of all time. The game would later sell over 22 million units worldwide by June 2020, 26.04 million units by November 2020, and 31.18 million units by February 1st, 2021.
