The update from Oskar Gabrielson, General Manager at DICE, reads:
Building the next generation of Battlefield during a global pandemic has created unforseen challenges for our development teams. Given the scale and scope of the game, we had hoped our teams would be back in our studios together as we move toward launch. With the ongoing conditions not allowing that to happen safely, and with all the hard work the teams are doing from home, we feel it is important to take the extra time to deliver on the vision of Battlefield 2042 for our players.
Your enthusiasm for the game has been very inspiring. we believe in the game we’re making, and we thank you for your patience as we put some finishing touches into the experience.
Updates on the Open Beta will be coming later this month.
That final note seems to indicate that the open beta for Battlefield 2042 has also been nudged back a little bit. The widespread rumours were that it would be taking place this month, next week in fact, but whether that plan was true or not, the beta likely won’t be for a little while yet.
The delay fits with the overarching narrative of the video games industry as a whole, which has struggled through 2020 and 2021 to keep to production deadlines while also adapting to working from home and with social distancing in mind. Countless games have been delayed, from the vast majority of Sony’s 2021 slate of PlayStation 5 exclusives – Horizon Forbidden West, GT7 and God of War: Ragnarok – to pretty much every Warner Bros. game, Dying Light 2, and even the new generation release of GTA V!
EA seems to be confident enough that they can release this year with just a one month delay, though it’s worth bearing in mind that this is a huge team of developers spread across four studios: DICE, Ripple Effect, Criterion Games and EA Gothenburg.
Announced earlier this year after months of rumours and build up, DICE first unveiled the All-Out Warfare mode with Conquest and Breakthrough and up to 128 players on newer systems – PS4 and Xbox One will be restricted to 64 players. The game will have the biggest maps ever found in the series, as well as AI characters that will help keep these massive maps feeling populated at all times.
Alongside that, the newly rebranded Ripple Effect studio has cooked up Battlefield Portal. Remastering content from the original Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, Portal puts control of the game in your hands, letting users mashup their own game modes, create unique experiences, and more.
The last game experience is the Hazard Zone mode, which is rumoured to take inspiration from Escape from Tarkov, but is catagorically not a battle royale.
Battlefield 2042 will now release on 19th November 2021 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One and PC.
