In a post on the Battlefield News Twitter account, EA has confirmed that the upcoming Battlefield 2042 will feature cross-progression across all platforms. Similar to titles such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty Warzone, anything you unlock on PC will follow you over to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. In addition to that, 2042 will also feature "cross commerce," meaning any microtransactions you purchase will follow you to different platforms as well. It's always nice to have your purchase of a pink gun follow you anywhere.
As is becoming common in the industry, many games are starting to adopt cross-progression models for players to make use of. There's no real reason why unlocking things on one platform should bar you from using them on another, especially if you're using the same account. It really helps when considering things like cross-play, where players on different platforms can match up together in the same game.

Speaking of cross-play, EA has confirmed that it will be looking into adding the feature in the near future. In a blog post on its website, the company details how cross-play will work. Due to the limitations of last-gen hardware, the PS4 and Xbox One ports of Battlefield 2042 will be locked to their own servers. Players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S will have another set of servers. If you're not comfortable facing PC players, you can opt out of being matched with them.
While the feature may not be ready for launch, EA will host a technical beta during the summer that will test out cross-play on each platform. There are no real details about how this will work as the blog post says, "The Technical Playtest will be in a closed environment and under strict NDA. Only a small group of participants will be able to join." EA will be sending out invites to whomever it deems worthy and going on feedback, it will then work on implementing the feature into the main game. It seems like a no brainer, especially since Call of Duty has had it for two games now.
