If fans of Call of Duty were to be polled about what characters are the most famous and or beloved in the series, two names would most likely top the list. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s Captain Price, who recently had a multiplayer skin added to the game, and Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Frank Woods. With a brand new Black Ops game about to be added to the series, the voice actor for one of the franchise’s most beloved game is upset he wasn’t invited.

Frank Woods is returning for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The grizzled war-soldier has been involved in massively important events throughout the fictional series. When the newest trailer dropped for Cold War, fans were pumped to see Woods in it. However, some may have noticed that the voice was just a bit off, and that’s because the game has a new voice actor.

In a YouTube interview, James C Burns answered some questions from the audience about his roles, of course, Frank Woods being the character fans want to know about. While perhaps not as drastic of a voice actor change as Metal Gear Solid 5 and Snake, Burns expressed being “bummed” that he lost the role that he had performed for 11 years.

Burns says that the reason he lost the role is a complete mystery. Some rumors point to the idea that because he worked on a fanmade Zombies map (a place where Black Ops Cold War has tons of potential) called Kowloon, that Treyarch or Activision pulled him from future projects out of spite. But Burns said that isn’t the case at all. He also noted that whoever else was picked will certainly do well, that he knows that person is a professional, but that he believes he simply knows the role better.

I’m sure the story’s going to be f******g brilliant. It’s just that if I could have brought all that I know… like I got 80,000 pounds of weight to bring to this thing. Not a knock on whoever they got in to do it, but he doesn’t have the background I have with Woods. I’ve got 11 years with this guy man, and I have all this backstory and all this front-loaded stuff… and I know the… man!

Burns’s frustration is evident in the video. What’s doubly odd about the whole thing is that Black Ops Cold War is a continuation of the Black Ops series. At one point evidence hinted to the next Black Ops being a reboot, but it has now been confirmed that Cold War takes place in between the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2. So bringing along the regular voice actor of Woods makes all the sense in the world, but that’s not what happened.

There are still a lot of questions about Cold War that need to be answered, but one thing is for sure. James C Burns will not be Woods in the game. “I’m so bummed I didn’t get a chance at it. That’s all.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches November 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
