The amount of friendly faces you'll find in Dark Souls can be counted on one hand. Even some faces that appear friendly may end up stabbing or kicking you in the back, too. But all NPCs have their own unique quests you can choose to help them with, assuming you can figure out where to find them, what they even want, and how to go about accomplishing it.

Siegmeyer of Catarina is perhaps the most jovial and endearing character you have the option of running into, perhaps aside from fan-favorite Solair, but also has a very long and complex questline that is very easy to screw up. If you want a step by step guide on how to help him reach the end of his journey, plus earn a very rare reward, we'll make sure you don't go hollow trying to figure it out on your own.
Updated August 10th, 2021, by Charles Burgar: It's rare to find a friendly face in the Dark Souls universe, much less a drowsy knight in onion-shaped armor. Siegmeyer of Catarina is easily one of Dark Souls' most memorable NPCs, one that asks the player for help throughout their journey. To help players assist this knight through his rather obscure quest, we've updated this guide to give more detailed and organized information. This guide should be much easier to follow now. Good luck, and don't you dare go Hollow.
How To Start Siegmeyer's Questline
Siegmeyer of Catarina can be first seen outside of Sen's Fortress, sitting on a ledge just outside the gates. You don't need to speak to him here to start his quest, but this is the first time you'll be able to interact with him. If Siegmeyer is sleeping, you'll need to ring a Bell of Awakening. Ringing both bells will cause Siegmeyer to move.
For actually starting his quest, you must talk to Siegmeyer when you reach Anor Londo. He can be found after the bonfire inside the castle. Make your way to the top of Anor Londo, kill any Silver and Black Knights in your path, then descend a spiral staircase to find Siegmeyer standing outside a door.

-
Sen's Fortress (Gate)
- Optional
-
Sen's Fortress (Outskirts)
- Optional
- Anor Londo
- Firelink Shrine
- Blighttown
- Lost Izalith
-
Ash Lake
- Tied to one of Siegmeyer's endings
Sen's Fortress Encounters
You'll first encounter Siegmeyer outside of Sen's Fortress, resting just outside of the gates. This encounter is optional.
Siegmeyer can be found further into the fortress once you've run both Bells of Awakening. Once you're on the outside ledge of the fortress and meet your first boulder, roll down the right side of the stairs to find Siegmeyer.
Anor Londo Encounter
Make your way to Anor Londo. Inside the main building, once you reach the roof and deal with the Silver Knights on the path, go down the big spiral staircase until you spot the big onion knight standing outside a room. Three more Silver Knights will be waiting inside. You'll need to kill all three Silver Knights in the next room to finish this quest step. Chat with him when you're done to obtain the Tiny Beings Ring.
Firelink Shrine Encounter
Once you've obtained the Lord Vessel, make your way back to Firelink Shrine. Siegmeyer will thank you for saving him, although he has one question stuck in his mind: did you open the gate? Answer "YES." He will thank you once again and give you the Emit Force miracle. Siegmeyer will then move to Blighttown once you leave Firelink.
Blighttown Encounter
If you can't find Siegmeyer, you likely are on this quest step. Strangely, you'll need to backtrack to Blighttown to find this onion knight again. Make your way to the swamp floor, then walk towards the entrance to The Great Hollow. He'll be stranded on an island next to a tree. You'll need to give Siegmeyer three Purple Moss Clumps for this step.

If you don't have any clumps handy, speak to the undead merchant in the aqueduct beside Firelink Shrine to purchase some. Siegmeyer will give you the Pierce Shield as thanks.
Note: Siegmeyer's daughter, Sieglinde, will spawn after this encounter. You can choose to free her now or after the Lost Izalith encounter. In this guide, we'll be freeing her after Lost Izalith. |
Lost Izalith Encounter
Your next encounter with Siegmeyer will be at Lost Izalith. Deep within the ruins, you'll come across a room where the floor collapses, revealing petrified branches that lead to a pit of Chaos Eaters—strange octopus-like creates with multiple eyes and teeth. Siegmeyer will be standing atop the pit, pondering how exactly he will kill all of them. This encounter has three different outcomes.
Siegmeyer's Quest Endings
The Lost Izalith encounter will determine the ending of Siegmeyer's questline. Don't talk to him until you've decided which outcome you want.
The goal of this encounter is to kill all four Chaos Eaters. There are three ways this encounter can play out:
-
Siegmeyer joins you and survives with 50% HP or more
- This continues the quest
- Completing the next step grants a Titanite Slab
-
Siegmeyer joins you and survives with less than 50% HP
- This ends the quest.
- Siegmeyer dies
- You'll gain the Speckled Stoneplate Ring.
-
You kill all of the Chaos Eaters before speaking to Siegmeyer
- This ends the quest.
- Siegmeyer survives and doesn't become Hollow
- You'll gain the Speckled Stoneplate Ring.
If you're aiming for the first ending, kill the Chaos Eaters as fast as you can. The longer SIegmeyer is down there, the lower his HP will get due to the poison. Speed through his dialogue when the Chaos Eaters are dead to prevent Siegmeyer from reaching lower than 50% HP during dialogue.
Rescuing Sieglinde To Complete Siegmeyer's Quest
At this point, you'll need to rescue a second NPC before you can finish Siegmeyer's quest. Make your way to the entrance to the Crystal Caves. Here you will see not Siegmeyer, but his daughter Sieglinde trapped inside a golden crystal golem. Defeat it to free her. Tell her that you've seen her father and run back to the nearest bonfire.
Warp back to Firelink again to find her waiting for you, again asking if you've seen her father. Like your earlier encounter with Siegmeyer, you must say, "YES." Once you've done both of these things, you can witness the last part of Siegmeyer's quest.
Siegmeyer Quest Epilogue: Ash Lake
This part of the quest only applies to those that saved Siegmeyer in Lost Izalith while he had 50% or more HP. After rescuing his daughter and stating you've seen him twice, head to Ash Lake. This area is found at the other end of The Great Hollow—a zone found at the swamp level of Blighttown. Make your way to Ash Lake's bonfire to find Sieglinde kneeling over Siegmeyer's corpse. She will thank you for everything you've done, giving you a Titanite Slab as a reward. This makes the end of Siegmeyer's quest.
