Norman Reedus and the Funky Fetus Are Back
Hideo Kojima, or rather, a recording to Hideo Kojima made an appearance at 2021’s Summer Game Fest where he spoke teasingly about his next game–and introduced Death Stranding Director’s Cut. The upcoming re-release was announced through a stunning PS5 trailer showcasing Sam Porter Bridges shuffling around a warehouse, observing the armed guards from a distance, and messing around with a box labeled Fragile Express. And yes, before you ask, he does get into the box. He climbs into it like a cat rather than sliding under it like Solid Snake, Big Boss, or Venom Snake, but the parallel is there and it brought a smile to our faces.
That’s not all that Kojima Productions shared on stream, though. In a brief speech to host Geoff Keighley, Kojima discussed how his game-making philosophy has been impacted by recent events. He stated that in the past, he was always trying to predict what would happen 5, 10 years in the future. However, things have been happening too quickly of late, so he’s changed the way he creates. Kojima states that in the future, his creative style won’t be taking things one step at a time.
He always wants to add some base societal elements to his games, but with how rapidly things are changing these days, he needs to consider what predictions he makes and how he introduces new ideas to the player. He did not go into any deeper detail about what this means for his next game, but this speech does carry some implications about where the developer will be going from here.
“Because it’s entertainment, it has to be fun,” said Kojima. “But since the era is catching up so quickly, it’s not really just fiction anymore.”
The full reveal of Death Stranding: Director’s Cut is just weeks away, so we’ll soon get a chance to see what Kojima is talking about in action.
Death Stranding Director’s Cut will be available on PS5 later in 2021.
