Death Stranding Has Sold Over 5 Million Copies

Death Stranding has sold over 5 million copies on PlayStation 4 and PC according to Kojima Studios head of publishing, Jay Boor. He said that the game has performed quite well and that the studio is optimistic about the launch of Death Stranding Director’s Cut.

"With Death Stranding being the first title developed out of Kojima Productions, from a sales perspective, it has performed quite well," said Boor in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. "As of March 2021, Death Stranding has sold through over five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC."

Further on in the interview, Boor spoke about Hideo Kojima’s reason for creating Death Stranding. Kojima would occasionally think about gamers who are prone to loneliness and feel as though they don’t fit into their community or society as a whole. The director wanted to make these gamers feel at ease by conveying that there are others who feel lonely as well.

“Death Stranding's core component is its Social Strand System, which is a unique asynchronous multiplayer feature that enables players to connect with other players from around the globe through a variety of in-game actions,” explained Boor. He also said that the Director’s Cut will expand on this system; we’ll learn how in the coming weeks.

The Director’s Cut not only aims to add in more content, but to also “enhance the core game experience and its features."

Death Stranding Director’s Cut will feature additional story content and more tools to help Sam make those important deliveries. You’ll come up against more strand based enemies who you can dispatch with new weapons and upgraded melee attacks. The delivery support tools include a catapult to launch your cargo ahead of you, a buddy bot to carry more goods and give you a ride too, a support skeleton, and a ramp to help you get over ravines. There’s also a race track that allows you to compete in classic cars for some reason.

It also turns out that the director doesn’t actually like the term ‘Director’s Cut’. Kojima tweeted saying that in movies a director’s cut is often an additional edit made due to external factors. But for Death Stranding Director’s Cut, “it is not what was cut, but what was additionally produced that was included.”
