Death Stranding Sales Were Apparently “Record Breaking” for Sony – Report

death stranding

For all of the buzz that Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding generated before release, there isn’t a whole lot known about its sales figures. It had fairly solid debuts in sales charts for Japan and the UK but Sony, its publisher, hasn’t exactly touted millions of units sold. However, the LinkedIn profile for a former PlayStation Worldwide Studios studio head indicates that it performed well.

Discovered by Tumur222 on Twitter, former studio head and visual arts senior director Michael Mumbauer had recently updated his LinkedIn profile. While discussing the use of different technologies for performance capture and animation, Mumbauer noted several titles that had achieved “record breaking sales and international acclaim for Sony.” Death Stranding was mentioned along with God of War, The Last of Us and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

While the “acclaim” part is certainly true going by critical reception, the other titles have sold upwards of 10 million copies since release. If Death Stranding were in the same category, it would surely have been promoted as such by Sony. Director Hideo Kojima stated in May 2020 that the game was profitable but also didn’t indicate that it had sold millions of copies. Until Sony confirms as much, it’s best to take this revelation with a grain of salt.

In the meantime, Kojima Productions is working on its next project (which was in the planning stage as per Kojima last year). Stay tuned for more details on that in the coming days.
