Destiny 2 Developer Currently Has No Plans for Class Homogeny

It wouldn’t be Destiny without some remark from Bungie causing controversy or mixed reactions in the community. More recently, it was an interview that director Luke Smith had with Polygon where he discussed updating the current Arc, Solar and Void subclasses and Supers in the game. Smith said that company wanted to have “one central system for Supers” (Stasis used a completely different customization scheme), though it’s not currently being pursued.

He then stated that, “I can totally imagine [it] in ‘Luke Fantasyland’. You know, all the Supers using the same system, that sounds awesome. But also the Supers that we have in the game would be an edited list. It would be something that’s edited toward more identity than what we have today.” Having an identity for the classes was noted, with Smith saying, “It’s much easier for me to look at Nova Bomb and say Nova Bomb is, like, IP-defining. It’s an IP-defining super; get rid of Nova Warp.”

Of course, this caused some concern among fans that Bungie was eventually planning to cut different Supers and subclasses from the game. Considering how much content has been vaulted already, this isn’t an unreasonable response. However, Smith took to Reddit to clarify that, “From a thematic/creative perspective, it sure would be sweet if the classes had strong gameplay identities instead of some of the homogeny that has steadily emerged. No plans to look at class homogeny right now. There are many other things to focus on.”

The key word though is “right now”- Bungie could look into this at some point and upend everything in Destiny 2 once more. But in the meantime, fans can rest easy.

Destiny 2 is currently available for Xbox One, PS4, PC, Google Stadia, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. You can check out our review for its most recent expansion, Beyond Light, here.
