Though not technically confirmed, fans are all but certain that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC 2 will pit them against the likes of Golden Frieza and his new Frieza Force Army. Though there are still a lot of questions to be answered, Gohan fans may be nervous knowing that the story is entering the territory of some of his worst moments, particularly the time it becomes clear he no longer knows how to enter Ultimate Form. Bandai Namco has not been clear about how Gohan’s character will be affected by this if at all, though, so the half-Saiyan’s future remains as uncertain as ever.

For those less familiar with the story of Dragon Ball Super, Gohan stops training after the events of the Majin Buu saga in order to focus on his studies and his family with Videl. Though this is in line with his character and ambitions, it disappointed many fans as it he went from being one of the strongest characters in the show to one of the weakest. By the events of Resurrection F, Gohan is barely able to tap into his Super Saiyan form, much less reach the heights of Super Saiyan 2 or Ultimate Gohan, so fans may want to know how this will reflect in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

It should be said that the upcoming DLC isn’t a story scenario but a boss battle DLC. This means that, much like the first DLC, it will likely take place outside of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot canon and focus mainly on Vegeta and Goku. Because of this, the most likely possibility is that Gohan won’t even be mentioned throughout the DLC and that Goku and Vegeta will hold the spotlight throughout. This would eliminate the problem of Gohan’s transformations, but perpetuate the problem of lackluster DLC content.

Still, there is some supporting information for this, as the recent DBZ: Kakarot DLC 2 scans show Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta battling Frieza’s army, a fight that Gohan and the other Z Warriors handled in the original story. It could be that rather than holding off the army while waiting for Goku and Vegeta to arrive, the rest of the Z Warriors won’t play a major role in the story at all. If Bandai Namco does decide to take this route, Gohan will remain the same, not getting any stronger or any weaker.

Gohan represents a strange case in Dragon Ball as he is one of the only characters to actually get weaker as the story progresses. Even characters like Krillin that are often the butt of Dragon Ball jokes get noticeably more powerful with each arc. There are times when they get rusty, but it typically doesn’t take much to get them back into fighting shape. In Gohan’s case, he has to undergo intense training with Piccolo in order to tap into his Ultimate form again before the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

If this is to be represented in the game, Gohan would have to lose access to Super Saiyan 2 and Ultimate Form in DLC 2. It’s possible that players could regain those forms by training with Piccolo to reawaken Gohan’s hidden potential, but in terms of story, that wouldn’t be able to happen until Dragon Ball Super‘s final arc, the Tournament of Power. Given that Gohan is such a popular character, it seems unlikely that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot would strip him of his power and make him less viable than other characters, so Gohan fans probably have nothing to worry about, but it is an interesting question to ponder nonetheless.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
