It’s the beginning of a new month which means two new games for PlayStation Plus subscribers are available to download right now. Throughout the month of September, subscribers to Sony’s service can claim the latest game in the classic fighting series, Street Fighter 5, and  PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which is one title that helped push along the battle royale craze.

Street Fighter 5 originally launched on the PlayStation 4 back in 2016 and went on to win the award for Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards later in the year. Since its release, Capcom has been busy updating its tentpole fighting game to keep the experience fresh – this includes adding a ton of new characters and stages. While the game has been out for quite some time now, Capcom has committed to updating Street Fighter 5 with a lengthy new season of content, which includes even more characters and taking the game to at least the fall of 2021.

PlayStation is also hosting a month-long online tournament for Street Fighter 5 starting on September 4. Players can sign up now and can earn unique digital prizes such as a PS4 theme and a custom in-game title. Players who reach the finals in the tournament will compete for a share of the $1,000 prize pool.

Following up last month’s smash hit Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Sony is giving PS Plus subscribers another battle royale game to keep the competition flowing. It’s not as cute and clumsy as Fall Guys but PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a battle royale staple and one that can be credited for the genre’s massive mainstream popularity. PUBG is closer to a simulation shooting game which will require players to become familiar with different maps and weapons to succeed. But hard work pays off and the glory of winning a chicken dinner is still exciting in 2020.

PS Plus subscribers can claim their copy of both Street Fighter 5 and PUBG starting today and have until October 5 claim the free games. Hopefully, recent PS Plus games will be included in the list of backward compatible titles for the PlayStation 5 when the console launches later this year.

With the PlayStation 5 preparing to launch in the next few months, it will be interesting to see how Sony handles PS Plus games on the next-gen console. Whether Sony shifts to a model that hands out PS5 games for subscribers or if players can expect more PS4 games via backward compatibility is still a mystery but the safe bet is on the latter for at least the new console’s initial launch.
