The trailer was posted this morning on the YouTube channel of Oliver Harper – the director of the documentary. Within the less that six minute videos, fans get to see clips from the actual documentary, which includes gameplay, as well as interviews with the director and screenwriter of the 1994 Street Fighter movie, Steven E. de Souza, as well as the martial arts stunt coordinator for the same movie – Benny "The Jet" Urquidez. The documentary will center around the phenomenon that was Street Fighter 2, different characters, design and how it took over gaming in the 90s. According to the crowdfunding site, Here Comes a New Challenger will examine how fans “…became better at the game through reading the players' guides religiously, learning tricks from gaming magazines as we saw the series take over the world…”
Here Comes a New Challenger was originally crowdfunded in 2020 on Kickstarter, where it raised over £27,000. However, according to creators a new fundraising campaign was started on Indigogo "due to the demand from fans who missed their chance to back it in 2020". The campaign states the new goal of being an additional £35,000. Fans can pay tiers that are set between £15 up to £1,500 and can receive items, such as a digital copy of the doc or producer credits in the film. No official release date has been set, but it seems likely that it will release sometime in 2022.
Street Fighter 2 isn’t the only game getting its own documentary. A new documentary that takes a look at the making of Blasphemous was recently released.
