With the 1.5 update of Stardew Valley, we were given a new area that is packed with things to do. While exploring Ginger Island, you will come across the Volcano Dungeon. Here, you can make your way through ten floors, battling monsters and collecting new material. At the top, you will encounter the Volcano Forge.

The Volcano Forge allows you to forge and enchant equipment, and there is a lot to it. In this guide, we are going to go over everything you need to know about the Volcano Forge, so you can start improving your equipment.
Getting To The Volcano Forge
As mentioned above, you will need to venture through the dungeons before getting to the Volcano Forge. This can take some time, so it's best to prepare. Bring plenty of food and healing items, as well as a warp totem so you can quickly escape if you are having a hard time.
The first time you go through the dungeons, you may not make it to the tenth floor, but this is okay. Leave the dungeon and regroup, and then visit the following day when you are more prepared. Visit the dungeon at the start of the day, so you have time to go through it all. It's easy to lose track of time, and you definitely don't want to pass out at 2 am while in the dungeon.
Once you make it to the Forge, you will unlock the area permanently, This means that you do not have to go through all ten floors again, as there will be a shortcut to the right of the entrance for the volcano.
For more information, check out this guide on the dungeon.
Your First Visit
The first time you visit the area with the Volcano Forge, there will be a chest waiting for you. Opening this chest will reward you with one prismatic shard, which can then be used in the forge. You can use the shard at the forge, or save it for later. When you visit the forge again, this chest will be gone.
Materials Needed To Use The Forge
Every action performed at the Volcano Forge will require cinder shards. These are little fragments that can be found within the ten floors of the dungeon.
Above, you can see a cinder shard ore. Mining this will yield a few shards. Additionally, cinder shards can be dropped from the following enemies.
- Magma Sprite
- Magma Sparker
- Magma Duggy
- False Magma Cap
If you have a fish pond filled with at least seven stingrays, you will have a chance to get between two to five cinder shards.
The quickest way to obtain cinder shards is by making your way through the dungeon. Next, let's take a look at the different actions that you can do at the Volcano Forge.
Forging Weapons
As its name suggests, you will be able to forge items at the Volcano Forge.
You are only able to forge melee weapons, including daggers, swords, and hammers. A weapon can be forged up to three times, adding a combination of stats.
Each time you forge a weapon, it will cost cinder shards. Below, you can find the cost for forging an item
- First Forge: 10x Cinder Shards
- Second Forge: 15x Cinder Shards
- Third Forge: 20x Cinder Shards
Overall, forging requires one gem. There are seven different gems that can be used to forge a weapon.
Gem | Upgrade |
---|---|
Amethyst | Knockback
|
Aquamarine | Critical Hit Chance
|
Emerald | Weapon Speed
|
Jade | Critical Hit Damage
|
Ruby | Damage
|
Topaz | Defense
|
Diamond | This will fill all levels with random upgrades and only costs 10 cinder shards. |
Enchantments
Enchantments are upgrades that require one prismatic shard. Unlike forging, enchanting does not affect one specific stat. Enchantments are done at random; you will not know which effect will be given. If you are unhappy with your enchantment, you can do it again, using additional cinder shards and a prismatic shard.
You will be able to enchant melee weapons and tools (excluding the copper pan and scythes). First, let's take a look at enchantments for weapons.
Weapon Enchantment | Effect |
---|---|
Artful | 50% cooldown on special moves |
Bug Killer | Doubles damage to all bugs (grubs, flies, spiders, rock crabs)
|
Crusader | 50% more damage to mummies, ghosts, skeletons, and void spirits
|
Vampiric | 9% chance to regain health on kill
|
Haymaker | cutting weeds gets more fiber, with a chance to collect hay
|
Now, let's take a look at the enchantments for tools. Some of these enchantments can be added to several weapons.
Tool Enchantment | Effect | Tools Applied To |
---|---|---|
Auto-Hook | automatically hooks fish when they bite |
|
Archaeologist | double chance of finding an artifact on artifact spots |
|
Bottomless | infinite water |
|
Efficient | stamina will not be drained |
|
Generous | 50% chance of receiving double the items while digging |
|
Master | adds an extra fishing level while held |
|
Powerful | adds 1 extra level for pickaxe, and 2 extra levels for axe |
|
Preserving | 50% chance that bait and tackle are not used |
|
Reaching | increased charge-up capacity for bigger area of effect (AoE to 5×5 tiles) |
|
Shaving |

|
Swift | 33% speed increase |

Making Infinity Weapons
At the Volcano Forge, you will also be able to create Infinity weapons. These are essentially stronger versions of the Galaxy weapons. To create these weapons, you will need Galaxy Souls. This item can be purchased from Qi's Walnut Room for 40 Qi Gems. You can also get Galaxy Souls after killing 50 Dangerous Monsters or spending ten radioactive bars at the Island Trader.
Overall, it's a bit difficult to get Galaxy Souls. If you do manage to get at least three, you can make your very own Infinity weapon. Below, you can see the three Infinity weapons, as well as the materials needed to make them.
Weapon | Materials Needed |
---|---|
Infinity Blade |
|
Infinity Dagger |
|
Infinity Gavel |

Changing Weapon Appearance
If you are unhappy with the appearance of a weapon, you will be able to change this at the Volcano Forge.
Place the weapon with the stats you want in the left square. Then, place the weapon with the appearance you want in the right square. This will cost ten cinder shards, and the weapon you place on the right will be consumed.
After doing this, your item will have a new appearance. This will only work on weapons of the same type though (swords merging with other swords).
Combining Rings
In addition to upgrading different tools and weapons, you will be able to combine rings. Place two rings in the squares of the Volcano Forge, with 20 cinder shards. This will create a new ring called 'Combined Ring'. The new ring will have the effects of both rings used. For example, combining a Glow Ring with a Slime Charmer ring will result in a combined ring that glows and prevents damage from slime.
Once a ring is combined, you will not be able to combine any additional rings with it.
This means that you can essentially equip up to 4 rings. This is helpful if you have several rings that you like, but find it difficult to decide which one to use.
Unforging An Item
Lastly, you can unforge items. This applies to forged weapons and combined rings. You will not be able to unenchant items, but as mentioned above, you can just re-enchant a weapon to get a different effect.
When you interact with the Volcano Forge, there will be a little red X in the bottom right corner. Placing a weapon or ring and pressing this X will unforge the item.
Doing so will remove upgrades and split rings back to their original state. Unforging will also reset any appearance changes that you have made. You will get back some of the cinder shards as well, but not all of them.
That's all there is to the Volcano Forge! Once you upgrade your weapons, be sure to check out our guide on all there is to do on Ginger Island.
