Magic: Legends Is Shutting Down This October

Wizards of the Coast, the developers and publishers of the tabletop gaming giants Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering have been having a rough time of it when it comes to translating their games into a video game over the past while. The latest D&D video game was weighed down by an assortment of glitches and bugs, and, while MtG’s online card game client Arena is still going strong, there’s bad news for Magic video gamers on the way – the action MMO Magic: Legends will be shut down later this year.

Magic: Legends invites players to choose one of five classes, with each corresponding to one of the colours of mana within the card game – white, blue, black, green and red. Legends first entered its open beta all the way back in March, giving players plenty of time to give feedback on how the game was doing and how it could be changed for the better. Unfortunately, it seems this feedback wasn’t particularly useful, as today it was announced that the game would never leave its open beta or receive a full release.

Steve Ricossa, Executive Producer for Magic Legends, made the announcement on the Magic Legends website:

“Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark, but we are proud of what we achieved. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we got to bring the expansive Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to a wide audience and explore new angles within the established ARPG genre. We learned several valuable lessons along the way, and we will use them to improve Cryptic’s future development efforts. Most importantly, we’d like to thank all of the players who explored the Multiverse with us and provided feedback during the Alpha and Beta testing phases. We couldn’t have gotten this far without you!”

Along with the announcement of the server shutdown, Ricossa revealed that any players who have spent money on in-app purchases will be receiving full refunds. The Magic: Legends servers will be deactivated on October 31, 2021.
