Marvel’s Avengers launched early today for pre-orders of the game’s special editions, but players are already eager to hear about what is planned for the game after release. Today Crystal Dynamics gave Avengers fans a bit of an idea as to what is to come, revealing the first post-launch story for the game.

The content stars none other than Kate Bishop, the other popular Hawkeye from Marvel Comics lore. Her backstory in the upcoming game is the same as in the books, with Kate being trained by original Hawkeye Clint Barton to carry on the mantle after he is gone. This is the second major Hawkeye reveal for Avengers, with the first being the announcement of Clint in the last War Table.

The story will focus on Kate, who is now part of SHIELD, as she attempts to track down Clint. Within the reveal trailer she finds him, but surprisingly, he seems to be working with AIM. Clint could simply be undercover, or possibly mind-controlled like in the first Avengers film. Regardless, he will likely not stay that way for long, as Clint is confirmed to be the game’s first post-launch hero with plenty more Avengers characters on the way.

The length of the campaign, titled “Taking Aim,” was not given. It is described as a two-parter, however, supposedly connecting to Clint’s own storyline. These extra campaigns are being referred to as “Operations” and will be free of charge like the rest of the game’s non-cosmetic content. Like other Operations, “Taking AIM” will introduce a new location, villain, and hero. By the time the content arrives, the game will likely be in a very stable place given the Crystal Dynamics team’s use of player feedback.

Kate Bishop was on the leaked DLC character roster for Avengers, so while her appearance is not necessarily surprising, it is nice to see her officially. She will be played by talented voice actor Ashly Burch and will supposedly  have a vastly different moveset from Clint’s. It will be interesting to see just how differently she plays from him, though, as having the two different Hawkeyes could be either extremely exciting or seem very lazy depending on the diversity in their gameplay. At the very least, the teleportation ability used by Kate in the trailer should allow for some fun traversal options.

Kate Bishop and Clint Barton will be the focus of the first two Operations in Marvel’s Avengers, and unlike the PlayStation-exclusive hero Spider-Man, they will be available on all platforms. It will be exciting to see their relationship explored within the game, as the recent Hawkeye comic runs have been some of the best in industry. For more info on the Operation and the post-launch roadmap, players will have to watch next month’s War Table.

Marvel’s Avengers is available September 4th on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X upgrades are also coming.
