Marvel’s Midnight Suns Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Card-Based Combat

Firaxis has revealed the first look at gameplay for Marvel’s Midnight Suns — a new tactical RPG from the developers of XCOM. In the footage, the team showed new card-based abilities and intense superhero combat.

As expected, Midnight Suns will have an isometric perspective on the battlefield with cinematic camera angles during eye-catching battle moves. Earlier the devs revealed that despite its turn-based style of combat, the upcoming game won’t share any familiar mechanics with the last XCOM entries. In many ways, it has become possible because of a new card-based combat system. Another thing to remember is that every character in your squad is an iconic superhero, who never misses their attack.

Basically, the combat in Midnight Suns works like this: you pick three heroes for your squad and then deal with a random selection of hero abilities like a hand of cards. The available cards will offer a vast array of tactical choices, rewarding you for clever thinking, utilization of the environment, and combining special attacks of everyone in the squad. Just like the XCOM games, the destructible surroundings will play a major role in your battle efficiency.

There will be 12 playable characters in Midnight Suns, each bringing their own unique tactics and game-changing finishers. Finding the right combination of heroes and their abilities will be very important for your progress. Moreover, you can unlock alternate costumes for heroes that will grant you access to additional skills.

Apart from its card-based combat, Midnight Suns will offer a deep role-playing experience. The game will feature a customizable original character called the Hunter, who has never before appeared in the Marvel Universe. As Hunter, you’ll get to live in the Abbey among Marvel legends, forging your relationships with Wolverine, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, and many more.

It may be too early to evaluate Midnight Suns' gameplay, yet it seems that fan reaction is fairly mixed at the moment. Some viewers criticized the game’s level design and expressed their concerns about the whole card system. Others simply noted they will watch all the cutscenes for a new Marvel story, but won’t play the game itself. We’ll see if the situation changes prior to launch.

Midnight Suns is coming in March 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
