Michael Keaton Hasn’t Watched A Comic Book Movie Since Batman 1989

Michael Keaton has admitted that he has never seen a full comic book movie since the 1989 Batman movie. Keep in mind he’s starred in plenty of comic book movies since his first outing as the caped crusader. He even starred in the sequel Batman Returns, which makes this ironic in a funny way. He’ll be returning to the cowl for the upcoming Flash movie and he’s also played Vulture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spiderman: Homecoming and the upcoming Morbius solo film.

Keaton has starred in plenty of other films besides superhero flicks including Birdman, Beetlejuice, and American Assassin, to name a few. He’s been keeping busy and has never claimed himself to be the biggest comic book fan. He always thought he could do Batman justice if he ever came back despite never thinking it would happen and it seems that fans will be getting what they asked for.

The upcoming Flash movie is rumored to retcon the current DC timeline and bring a host of new heroes as well as stories. Hopefully, the film delivers on this or a premise that’s worthwhile to fans because as of right now, the leaks are hyping it up to a whole new level. Recently a stuntman photo was leaked that looked very similar to Ben Affleck’s Batman and with Keaton's version of Batman involved, many came to the conclusion that The Flash will incorporate a potential multiverse storyline where there are alternate versions of the characters. As for Keaton himself, it appears he hasn't exactly been keeping with comic book movies since playing Batman. "After the first Batman, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an entire [comic book] movie,” he said. “I just never got around to it. So you’re talking to a guy who wasn’t in the zeitgeist of that whole world."

It appears that with The Flash, anything is possible. Many have been asking for Henry Cavill and Affleck to come back to play Superman and Batman, respectively, so fans will have to wait to see what happens. This movie also carries the weight of introducing the multiverse to the DC live-action timeline. Marvel Studios is also gearing up for the telling of their own multiverse story, so this may be a battle of who does it better once again.

Recently, the DC extended universe has been getting a second wind following the release of the Snyder Cut and the recent The Suicide Squad movie, which fans seemed to have enjoyed. Hopefully, with this movie, fans will be getting a revitalized version of what Zack Snyder started during his time working with DC, as he had big plans for what could’ve been a unique telling of the Justice League story.

Here’s hoping they bring Keaton justice as he finally comes back after decades of not being the man behind the cowl. The longer the wait, the bigger anticipation, so many fans are expecting great things for him. There’s also no word as to how big of a role his Batman will play in The Flash, so it can literally be anything between a quick conversation or an overarching storyline in the whole movie. Regardless, it would be nice if some things were kept secret but due to the digital age, that’s a hard thing to ask for.

The Flash is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 4, 2022.
