Final Fantasy VII Remake PlayStation Timed Exclusivity Ends Today

Final Fantasy VII Remake

The PlayStation timed exclusivity on Final Fantasy VII Remake has ended today, nearly one year after launch.

As previously reported, it was discovered prior to the game’s April 10th, 2020 launch on PlayStation 4 that there was a timed exclusivity deal. The box art for both the game and its Deluxe Edition on Amazon was updated to state it was a PlayStation timed exclusive until April 4th, 2021; today.

At this time of writing, there has been no announcements of ports to other systems, though the ending of exclusivity did not mean such an announcement would be made today. The exclusivity may have forbid Square Enix from even discussing ports prior to the end date. Further, Sony may be able to offer something to Square Enix one year on to prevent temptation to sell the game on a wider scale.

The game’s official Twitter account also celebrated the one year anniversary of Remake, and the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. This PlayStation 5 version of the game features improved graphics, performance modes, haptic feedback via the DualSense controller, Classic Mode on normal difficulty, and a Photo Mode.

The highlight is a new story focusing on Yuffie Kisaragi; entering Midgar as a (possibly self-proclaimed) spy for the new Wutai government. Along with new allies and new threats, players must help Yuffie in her quest around Midgar around the time of the events of the original game. The end of timed exclusivity may mean Intergrade will be heading to other systems.
