With September fast approaching, Arkane fans are just weeks away from getting their hands on Deathloop, with the PlayStation 5 console exclusive hitting shelves on September 14. With the title's release inching closer by the day, it seems Arkane is keen to spill more details on its time-looping murder puzzle, offering a new 25-minute presentation during Quakecon that delves into one of its lesser covered aspects.
While fans have known for a while that multiplayer will be a big part of Colt's mission to break the loop, the studio hasn't shown off much gameplay from the perspective of its mysterious second playable lead, Julianna. Through Arkane's new footage, fans finally got a much clearer look at the antagonistic character's role in the game, what differentiates her from Colt, and how PVP will intersect with the main campaign.

The deep-dive begins with Deathloop's creative director, Dinga Bakaba, explaining exactly how multiplayer functions. Upon booting up the game, players will get to choose whether they want to break the loop as Colt or protect it as Julianna, with selecting the latter allowing them to enter a hub where they can gear up and select their target (whether that be a random online opponent or a friend).
They'll then jump into a campaign and wage war against Colt, although, as Bakaba reveals, they'll need to play it smart to get the upper hand on their enemy. When asked what differentiates Colt and Julianna, the creative director revealed that Colt has the ability to resurrect himself from death two times, while Julianna will exit the loop if she dies just once. It means players attempting to stop their heavily-armed adversary will have to set up well-placed traps and utilize illusionary special abilities to deceive him and finish him off for good.
As for why Colt players will want to take Julianna down, Bakaba lists several reasons. According to the creative director, she usually drops valuable guns and loot, meaning they'll snag some lucrative rewards for taking her down. However, he also hopes that players will want to engage in battle with someone who's just as powerful as them and enjoy attempting to outwit a challenging opponent. As for why they should play as Julianna, Bakaba notes that the studio didn't want to make it compulsory but thinks it's a compelling and unique experience, allowing players to step into the shoes of the villain and interact with Deathloop's world in a fun new way.
The rest of the deep-dive takes a closer look at Colt and Juliana as characters, the unique dynamic they share, and Colt's self-deprecating sense of humor, as well as the game's puzzle-esque format. It's well worth a watch, both for its early glimpse at Deathloop's fast-paced PVP action and insight into the upcoming shooter's mind-bending sci-fi story.
Deathloop is slated to launch on September 14 for PC and PlayStation 5.
