New Pokemon Snap Has Sold More Than 2 Million Copies In The West

Nintendo's latest quarterly report has revealed that New Pokemon Snap has exceeded two million units sold, and that doesn't even include Japan.

The Pokemon Company has been spoiling Pokemon fans already this year. New Pokemon Snap in April followed by Pokemon Unite last month. There's still a lot more to come too. The much-anticipated remakes of Diamond and Pearl arrive just in time for the holidays, followed by Pokemon Legends: Arceus to kick off 2022 if all goes to plan.

Pokemon Snap's release will have been somewhat experimental for Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. It's very different from the main series and it has been more than two decades since the original game launched. However, Nintendo's latest quarterly figures, courtesy of Serebii, have revealed creating a Snap sequel was a chance worth taking.

The report revealed that New Pokemon Snap had sold 2.07 million copies outside of Japan. While it has a long way to go to catch up with the 21.85 million copies of Sword & Shield that have shipped worldwide, it's pretty good for the first two and a half months for what is a pretty niche spinoff. Especially since it doesn't include numbers from one of Pokemon's biggest markets. It may have even pulled ahead of The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD whose physical sales surpassed Snap's recently.

Snap's sales could well experience a second spike this month too as its first major update arrived this week. The update brought with it three new areas and 20 additional Pokemon. The game getting even bigger will potenitally bring in new players. It will have also given many hope that the update will be the first of many. This first one wasn't announced until a surprise trailer dropped last week.

Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have been using Pokemon's 25th anniversary to take more risks than they normally would. While Snap revisited a concept for the first time this century, Unite is an entirely new take on Pokemon games. Pokemon's first foray into the MOBA world, and it seems to be a hit. Unite is free to play on Nintendo Switch and will be coming to mobile later this year.
